Too Old for Orthodontics?

Balance Epigenetic Orthodontics - April 19, 2019 - 0 comments

Are you an adult contemplating what orthodontics can do for you?

Do you feel you’ve waited too long and now it seems orthodontics may not be right for you? Well, don’t write it off yet.

The ideal time to make changes to the positioning of your teeth is during childhood because that is when your mouth is still growing and developing. But, there’s never a wrong time to get the smile you’ve always dreamed of, and more and more adults today are embracing orthodontics for just that reason!

There really is no cut-off age when it comes to orthodontics. As an adult, you’ll make a good candidate for orthodontics in many of the ways an adolescent would, and because you are more invested in the outcome as an adult, in some ways you may even make a better candidate.

Why You May Want Orthodontics as an Adult

There are two major reasons both adults and adolescents choose to undergo orthodontics treatments. These are usually divided between aesthetics and medical/dental reasons.

Aesthetic benefits of orthodontics. We always want to look our best, and our self-image usually affects our self-esteem and confidence. This has an impact on our careers and personal lives. Orthodontics can help you achieve a smile you’re proud to show off, building your confidence at home and at work.

If you’ve always wanted to change the look of your teeth, being an adult will not prevent you from seeking orthodontic treatment to help you make the necessary changes.

Medical and dental benefits of orthodontics. Orthodontics can be used to address a range of dental and general medical conditions, from sleep apnea to temporomandibular joint disorder and jaw pain, eating and chewing difficulties, and speech impairments, among others.

Straightening the teeth is also generally believed to make them easier to clean.

The bottom line is that orthodontic treatment can be as successful for adults as it is for younger people. Although adults have bone tissues that are significantly denser than children, this just means that treatment will take a little longer than in children.
