Facial Asymmetry and TMD Diagnosis

Balance Epigenetic Orthodontics - February 3, 2022 - 0 comments

A face that isn’t symmetrical is structurally supported differently on each side. This asymmetry is often a strong indicator of temporomandibular joint underdevelopment, which is a primary contributor to TMJ disorder. This misalignment causes strain on supporting facial structures leading to varying degrees of discomfort.

Symptoms of TMD

In a peer-reviewed study titled “Temporomandibular joint internal derangement in mandibular asymmetry. What is the relationship?” published in the National Institutes of Health’s archive, researchers Buranastidporn, Hisano, and Soma compared test subjects with facial asymmetry and derangement of the TMJ. Their research concluded that the degree of asymmetry significantly correlated with TMD symptoms. Some of the symptoms most commonly associated with TMD symptoms include:

  • Head: Headaches, migraines, facial pain
  • Neck: Neck pain, cervical dystonia, painful swallowing
  • Ears: Ear pain, ear congestion, vertigo, dizziness
  • Jaw: Jaw locking, temporomandibular joint pain, worn or chipped teeth, clicking and popping of the joint
  • Body: Fibromyalgia, generalized anxiety, tingling, numbness

A Model for Facial Symmetry

The Marquardt mask utilizes the golden ratio and applies the principle to the human face. The Marquardt mask incorporates symmetrical geometric shapes to outline the “ideal” location of facial features. While controversial as a model for standardized beauty, the Marquardt mask does represent a symmetrical face. Jaws that don’t follow this layout indicate a potential for temporomandibular disorder. Because TMD is often the result of an underdeveloped jaw, this can result in functional and cosmetic problems.

How Can Asymmetry Be Treated?
