Jaw pains can manifest in different forms. It could be something like a dull ache or, in extreme cases, a stabbing sensation. While it can show up all of a sudden, it can also start off as a mild pain before the intensity amps up. Whatever the level of your jaw pain, you’ll surely experience some form of discomfort – and you’ll want to get over this frustration as soon as possible.

You can visit us at Balance Epigenetic Orthodontics so we can assess your jaw pain and devise an effective treatment plan. However, our approach will be dependent on the underlying cause(s) of your jaw pain. In most cases, your jaw pain can be caused by:

  • Temporomandibular joint disorders
  • Dental issues
  • Joint problems, etc

TMJ Disorder

Although TMJ disorders affect one in eight people, this condition is more prevalent among women. Illness, injuries, arthritis and stress can initiate or worsen this condition. When you constantly have to deal with headaches; pain around the ears, jaw and face; dizziness; or a clicking sound in your mouth when it’s opened, this may be TMJ disorder. However, you can only be sure of what it truly is when you visit us to get it checked out.

Dental Issues

Jaw pain can also be caused by a myriad of dental conditions, from toothache arising from cavities to gum disease, as well as cracked, crowded and sensitive teeth. You can rinse your mouth with warm water or use dental floss to find a bit of relief, but you need to visit your dentist right away for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Joint Problems

Rheumatoid arthritis, for example, can attack and damage the spongy cartilage that makes it easy for the temporomandibular joints to move smoothly. Joint problems like this can cause soreness and stiffness of the joint, leading to excruciating jaw pain.

That said, jaw pain is still not limited to TMJ disorders and dental issues.

Although these are often the common culprits, bruises, swelling, blows to the jaw and trauma, as well as heart attack and diseases like mumps and tetanus, can also cause jaw pain. This is more reason to seek medical care so you’ll know what’s causing your jaw pain and can get effective treatment.
