The hot summer is right around the corner. And, while you may not love the sweltering days, you probably love summer. Why? Summer is a great time to relax, reduce stress and have fun. But, summer can also not be a ton of fun if temporomandibular joint dysfunction sidelines you. For some people, summer can mean a flare in their TMJD symptoms, including inflammation, swelling, stiffness and pain. Make the most of your summer with these tips from Balance Epigenetic Orthodontics.
Ease Into Summer
There is nothing better than jumping into a cold swimming pool or lake when temperatures hit triple digits, but a severe jolt can cause pain and stiffness in your jaw after swimming. Why does this happen? Well, very sudden changes in temperate can cause your symptoms to flare as your muscles tense up.
You don’t have to skip the pool, though! We recommend easing into it or swim in warmer spots. If you notice a flare in your symptoms, warm up in the sun for a bit.
Don’t Stay Out Too Long
You may develop a headache from squinting in the bright light if you’re in the sun for too long. Squinting can cause your face and head muscles to get tense and contribute to a flare of symptoms. Dehydration is also a risk of too much sun exposure, and it can be hard on your jaw joints. We recommend upping your water intake when it’s hot outside or if you’re working out.
Try to Eat Healthily
We get it; it’s summer. That means a lot of snacking and maybe enjoying drinks with alcohol and caffeine. We recommend trying to eat an anti-inflammatory diet as much as possible and that you avoid foods that are hard, crunchy or chewy to prevent aggravating your condition.
The same goes for what you drink. If you’re drinking beverages that contain alcohol or caffeine, you can get dehydrated and your joints can be affected. We recommend increasing your water intake to two glasses of water for every alcoholic or caffeinated beverage you drink.
