First of all, congratulations! We’re so excited for you and this journey! We know you’re getting a lot of health advice from a variety of people and it may be a little overwhelming to sort through all of this information right now. We’ll keep it short and simple for you! Here are 5 ways to care for your teeth that are safe for you and baby!
Tell Your Dentist the Good News
Your dentist is a great resource for advice and recommendations regarding your dental health during pregnancy. Your dentist needs to be aware in case they’re planning to do any x-rays or prescribe medication. Not to mention they’ll want to celebrate the good news with you!
Don’t Change Your Dental Routine
There’s a lot going on but it’s important to not change your routine. Keeping up with your routine throughout your pregnancy will help to increase the chance that you’ll stick to it once the baby arrives. Make sure you’re brushing, flossing, and rinsing with mouthwash twice a day.
Try to Get Your Morning Sickness Under Control
Morning sickness is totally normal and you’ll typically experience this within the first 3 months of your pregnancy. Pay close attention to how often your morning sickness is happening because the acidity in your vomit can cause damage to your teeth. Seek out natural remedies like ginger tea or seek medical advice from your doctor if you’re experiencing an unusual amount of morning sickness. To help protect your teeth after throwing up, drink a glass of warm water and baking soda to clean out as much of the acid as you can.
Keep an Eye out for Signs of Gum Disease
Your hormones are going to get a little crazy if they haven’t already. With an increase in hormones, you may be at an increased risk for gum disease as well. You may notice bloody or sore gums. If you experience this, consult with your dentist right away.
Check With Your Dentist Before Getting any Major Procedures
Be sure to consult with your dentist before getting any procedures done. It’s best to avoid any medication or stress on your body so if you’re thinking about getting a cosmetic procedure, you should consider waiting until after the baby arrives. Routine dental procedures like cleaning should be okay but it’s still good to check in with your dentist as a best practice.
