The temporomandibular joint is a ball and socket joint that’s put to work whenever we talk, breathe, eat and drink. It helps to move the jaw around without causing pain, inflammation or any of those symptoms that come with TMJ disorders.
As it turns out, the daily wear and tear the TMJ experiences makes it more susceptible to inflammation and misalignment over the years. But how exactly can you know this is a problem?
Causes and Symptoms of a Misaligned Jaw
Ordinarily, the teeth should sit properly aligned for jaw function. There should not be too much pressure or too much impact. When the teeth are not properly aligned, that’s when individuals have to deal with overbites and underbites.
Neither of these conditions may need treatment or correction if the individual is comfortable. However, jaw misalignment will become problematic when certain uncomfortable symptoms occur. These symptoms include:
- Stiff jaw that makes chewing painful
- Stiff jaw causing speech difficulty
- Excess mouth breathing with a clear nose
- Pain/pressure on the face/jaw that may make sleeping difficult
- Constant headaches and facial pain
- Change in bite that can be sudden or gradual
- Facial pain after eating or talking
All of these point to a misaligned jaw problem that will need urgent treatment.
Treating Jaw Misalignment
Treating your misaligned jaw will depend on several factors. These include whether it’s a minor or major issue, your symptoms and triggers, as well as your history of TMJD issues.
Those who are not feeling any pain or dental problems may not need invasive treatment. When jaw misalignment starts to cause pain and wear and tear on the teeth, it makes sense to see a dental professional right away.
