The Root Cause

Did you know that temporomandibular joint dysfunction, or TMJD, is often referred to as “the great imposter”? It has earned this moniker because many of its symptoms seem to be entirely unrelated to your bite. These symptoms include things like Meniere’s disease, tinnitus, headaches, neck pain and unexplained ear pain. Another symptom of TMJD that often shows up but wouldn’t make you think about your jaw or bite is vertigo. In many cases, people living with TMJD seek a diagnosis of something — anything — to explain their uncomfortable symptoms and may go years without a diagnosis.

Vertigo is the name for the feeling of dizziness or feeling off-balance. It’s often described as feeling as if the entire world is moving while you’re standing still.

What Is TMJD?

TMJD is a condition caused by a number of factors, including age, injury, dental restorations and an unbalanced bite. Its symptoms include pain; stiffness; creaking, popping and snapping of the jaw; swelling; loss of jaw function; and the mysterious or unexplained symptoms mentioned above.

But How Can the Jaw Cause Vertigo?

If your jaw is out of alignment, it can put pressure on the tiny bones of the ear that balance the body. These bones are part of the vestibular system, located inside the temporal bone where the jaw bone attaches to the skull. If your jaw is out of place, the force on this bone can prevent the bones of the ear from keeping the body balanced and contribute to the feelings of dizziness or vertigo.
