This is Not Your Parent’s Orthodontics!
Read more about newer research that shows that jaw development treatment strategies can positively affect the airway and sleep breathing. Developing the jaw first, maximizes your airway and creates the proper space and alignment for jaws, tongue and teeth. With this healthy foundation in place, Dr. Buck then straightens your teeth for long-lasting health and a beautiful smile. We welcome you to learn more about the amazing life-changing results of epigenetic orthodontics, from the elimination of chronic pain, to the cosmetic face-lift effects, to the restful nights’ sleep free of snoring and sleep apnea. No, this is not orthodontics like your parents had. Epigenetic orthodontics is about a lifetime of health and a beautiful smile!
Dr. Buck is a master certified instructor with the Facial Beauty Institute which teaches dentists advanced cranio-facial orthopedics and orthodontics. He also lectures nationally and internationally on TMJ treatments, epigenetic science and orthodontics. Dr. Buck has attained Mastership status at LVIADS in the treatment of TMJ problems, and dentists from around the country refer some of their most challenging cases to him for evaluation and treatment. Additionally he coaches and consults with many dentists providing case support for their patient's care. Dr. Buck is former faculty member at LVIADS, and also a former director for orthodontics at LVIADS.
What is Epigenetics?
Epigenetics is the study of changes in organisms caused by modification of gene expression rather than alteration of the genetic code itself. An epigenetic perspective of jaws and teeth acknowledges that the facial bones and jaws do not have a pre-determined, immutable genetic expression(with rare exceptions that are genetically driven syndromes), but rather are totally responsive to all of the soft tissue influence going on during growth and function. The so called Functional matrix hypothesis applies here which is well accepted scientifically.
What this means practically is that the majority of facial and jaw growth occurs in response to stimulation from such things as breathing, swallowing, chewing and overall functional patterns. If these functional patterns are corrupted, then significant altered facial and jaw growth can occur leading to malocclusion, crowded teeth and underdeveloped jaws. This sets the stage for much increased risk of sleep breathing problems and apnea, along with the spectrum of TMJ/TMD disorders. So in summary, there is a genetic blueprint for the full development of the jaws, teeth and occlusion, but an epigenetic influence (negative soft tissue and functional) alters this genetic expression leading to a corruption of full genetic potential.
Epigenetic Science and Dentistry
An epigenetically driven approach can be used which means firstly any negative functional soft tissue influence is corrected, and then appropriate orthopedic stimulation can be utilized to turn on remodeling potential in adults and actual growth in children. The result is a positive change in the shape, size and position of both upper and lower jaws moving them as close to full genetic potential as possible. Under Dr. Buck's family orthodontic treatment in Seattle, WA., jaw development strategies result in your healthiest, happiest smile where everything fits, feels good and looks great. TMJ and Epigenetic Orthodontics
Dr. Buck applies epigenetic science prior to moving teeth with braces stimulating jaw development at a foundational level giving the chance for the body to fully develop underdeveloped jaws. With the jaws fully developed everything fits… all the teeth, the jaws, the tongue. In this environment, Dr. Buck straightens the teeth with orthodontics, building the balanced, beautiful smile on the solid structure of fully developed jaws. That is your happiest smile possible!

Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea is much more serious than simply snoring. Obstructing the airway reduces oxygen intake which affects your entire health. Distressed breathing also prevents restful sleep. A person feels these exhausting effects in the short-term, but long-term these factors threaten overall health and wellness. Sleep apnea is linked to serious health-threatening conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes.
Obstructive Sleep Apnea is caused by multiple factors including a structurally diminished airway as a result of underdeveloped jaw structure. The tongue has insufficient room to stay forward out of the airway during sleep and the lower jaw if retruded creates an narrowing of the functional capacity of the airway. We often see improved measurements of the airway at the base of the tongue and the nasal cavity after jaw development orthopedics in adults and children. The improved airway may contribute to better and deeper sleep.
