Oral Hygiene Hacks for Life with Braces

Life with braces can be frustrating, even when you know the results will be worth it in the end. Here are a few hacks to help you when life with braces gets challenging.

Hack No. 1: Make an On-the-Go Kit

Rarely do things go wrong when you're at home with everything you need right at your disposal. This is why creating an on-the-go braces kit can help in big ways. What should you put in it? Things like a toothbrush, toothpaste, interproximal brush, floss, wax and lip balm are a good start, along with anything else you think might be helpful.

Hack No. 2: Use a Water Pick

Flossing can be one of the biggest challenges when it comes to caring for your teeth while undergoing orthodontic treatment. If you're struggling with traditional floss, try using a water pick. Many of our patients are amazed at how much easier it is and how much more often they find themselves flossing now that it isn't such a pain.

Hack No. 3: Download a Mirror App or Carry a Small Mirror

Food loves to hide in the tiny crevices of your brackets, and it can be embarrassing to get home and realize you've had a huge piece of cilantro in your teeth for who knows how long. If you don't want to carry a compact mirror with you, there are several mirror apps in the app store on both iPhones and Androids.

Hack No. 4: Use Saltwater or Ice Cream to Help with Pain

After getting your braces adjusted or tightened, there can be a lot of soreness and even pain. Try a saltwater rinse to help with the irritation. It also helps kill bacteria.

Another thing to try is ice cream! Cold can help reduce inflammation, so try treating yourself to a popsicle or bowl of ice cream. You can also use an ice pack.

Epigenetic Orthodontics can open and protect the airway enhancing breathing both during sleep and awake activities.

Dr. Buck practices a philosophy that integrates airway into all diagnosis and treatments. Dentistry has traditionally not considered the airway when planning dental treatments. Fortunately, today there is a rapidly growing movement that now recognizes how dentistry can have an impact on the airway which affects breathing during sleep. If dental treatments, including TMJ, orthopedic and orthodontics are well planned the result can be that the airway is protected or even enhanced. There is a clear link between underdeveloped and retruded jaws together with narrow dental arches that puts a patient at risk for sleep breathing disorders.
