What Is Epigenetics?

One of the first questions we’re asked by new and prospective patients when they hear our name, Balance Epigenetic Orthodontics, is, What exactly is epigenetics and what does it mean when it comes to dentistry? Read on to learn the basics about epigenetics and our revolutionary strategy at oral care and development, and what it means for you or your loved one.

What Is Epigenetics?

At its most basic form, epigenetics is the science of what is on top of the genetic code. In the past, scientists believed the genetic code was immutable, meaning it expressed itself based on the information in the base code.

Now we know that there are things that bind to the DNA and suppress it or activate it, turning genetic sequences on or off. This means that there are factors that can control how genes are expressed.

Epigenetics and Children

When it comes to epigenetics in dentistry, the focus lies in the development of the face and jaw. Many children and in turn adults don’t reach their true growth potential in their face and jaw. This leads to a host of dental and structural problems.

Dr. Buck uses the science of epigenetics to turn on genes that trigger growth in order to complete the development that may have been disrupted for various reasons during growth. Using a simple oral appliance, the lower jaw is stimulated and sculpted, changing its size, shape and position. Not only does this help with cranial strain, TMJ disorder and crowding of teeth, but it also helps improve breathing, especially in patients already suffering from sleep apnea or who may show a propensity for it in the future.
