Stop Losing Sleep This May with Better Sleep Month

  Every May marks Better Sleep Month, which focuses on educating the world about how good sleep can affect your health and quality of life. The month of education is sponsored by the Better Sleep Council, which pulls out all the stops to help educate the public during this important month with things like:

  • Tips and inspirational posts on social media
  • Opportunities to win gift cards though a "Sleepstakes" posted on the council's Facebook page
  • Weekly blog posts at Bettersleep.org
  • Survey results to learn more about sleep habits
  • A Better Bed Quizzz at Betterbedquiz.org/quiz

The council also offers tips that anyone can use to get a better night's rest.

Routines

Routines are a great way to help your body teach itself to shut down at the right time each night. Try to get your body on a schedule of waking and going to sleep at the same time each day. Setting up nightly bedtime rituals such as yoga, music, meditation, or tea and a hot bath can help your body get adjusted.

Gear for the Weary

Having the right mattress and pillows for your body is key to feeling relaxed and comfortable enough to fall into a deep sleep and wake up refreshed. Mattresses should be replaced every few years, and it's important to find the right level of softness or firmness to help you sleep best.

Room for Improvement

Making sure your room is cool, quiet and dark can help you fall asleep faster and stay asleep. Blinking lights from electronics can make it hard for your brain to turn off, even subconsciously. The Better Sleep Council recommends keeping your room between 65 and 67 degrees for optimal sleep comfort.

How Sleep Apnea Interferes with Sleep

Sometimes, no matter how low your stress levels are and how ideal your sleep environment is, you may wake up in the morning feeling like you didn't get any sleep. If you have trouble sleeping, feel tired throughout the day or find yourself snorting or gasping in the middle of the night, you could be suffering from sleep apnea. The hardest part about this sleep condition is that you may not even realize you have it, since many of the symptoms present themselves while you're asleep.
