For Some Couples it Feels Like Snoring Should be Grounds for Divorce

It’s a gold mine for comedic material, especially when it comes to sitcoms, but for the spouses of those who snore, it’s no laughing matter. Snoring is not only a concern for the one doing it, but for anyone else trying to get a good night’s sleep in the same room, it can be a big concern as well.

Most spouses will tell you they’ve tried every over-the-counter remedy they could find. They’ve tried nasal strips, nose plugs, wristbands, chin straps, you name it. They’ve tried hitting them with a pillow, wearing ear plugs, propping them up on 4 pillows until they fall over and even nudging (possibly kicking) them every time they snore.

Many couples end up resorting to sleeping in separate bedrooms as the desperation for a good night’s rest becomes so severe that they’ve run out of options. Although there are no reliable statistics available, if they did a study on how often snoring comes into play as a reason for ending a relationship or marriage, the numbers would likely be surprisingly high.

A study was, however, conducted at the Sleep Disorder Center at the Medical Center of Rush University married couples in which one partner snores had a high rate of marital dissatisfaction and admitted to having a reduced quality of life. It's no wonder since sleep deprivation can take a toll on our health and our mental wellbeing.

Long-term sleep deprivation can cause:

  • Impulsive behavior
  • Irritability
  • Forgetfulness
  • Impaired reaction times
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Paranoia
  • Weakened immune system
  • High blood pressure
  • Weight gain

Here at Balance Epigenetic Orthodontics, we take sleep seriously. If you think you or your partner may be snoring because of a  sleep disorder called sleep apnea, call us at 206-316-8286 to schedule an appointment.
