5 Ways to Make a Dentist Appointment More Enjoyable

Very few people look forward to their dental appointments with excited anticipation. In fact, according to research done over decades, most people actively avoid or dread their dental appointments even though they know these checkups are vital to their oral and overall health. Here are a few steps you can take to make your next dentist appointment more enjoyable and less stressful.

1. Ask about sedation dentistry.

In today’s world of modern dentistry and constantly evolving technology, patients with anxiety don’t have to suffer in silence. Most dental practices offer a variety of sedation options to help you relax and feel more comfortable during your appointment.

2. Schedule your appointment during a slow time (often the middle of the day).

This makes the appointment go faster, and the office is usually calmer and quieter without as many people coming and going. This also gives your dentist more time to spend with you and listen to your questions and concerns.

3. Ask your dentist to talk you through each step before it happens.

One of the biggest causes of anxiety is fear of the unknown. Many patients have reported that knowing exactly what will happen before it happens helps them feel more in control of the situation and allows them to relax more.

4. Establish a signal with your dentist and hygienist that means you need a break.

We’ve probably all found ourselves trying to talk to our dentist or hygienist only to realize we can’t speak with all the tools in our mouth. Set up a hand signal before your appointment begins so your dentist and hygienist know when you need a minute to rest or have a question or concern.

5. Reward yourself afterward.

Who doesn’t like treating themselves after a job well done? Reward yourself after each appointment with something like a shopping trip, bubble bath or trip to see a movie. Then you’ll always have something to look forward to after your appointments.
